The Macchi MC 72 first flew on September 10, 1931. Powered by the Fiat AS.6, a 24 four cylinder Vee-type, burning an exotic fuel, developed 3,100 hp. Immediately after take-off, the engine began to backfire, before the entire plane exploded.
On October 23, 1933, pilot Francesco Agello, after four passes, set a new speed record of 709 km/h, a record that is still unbroken for seaplanes today!
